Draper Days wrapped up this past weekend with a spectacular drone show, parade, and fireworks — but summer along the Wasatch Front shows no signs of slowing down. Days of '47 — Utah's most storied Pioneer Day celebration — is in full swing right now (July 18–25) with nightly rodeo, the Grand Parade on July 24, and a Gold Medal Round finale with drone and fireworks. Then as Pioneer Day wraps up, the Sandy Amphitheater keeps delivering: Death Cab for Cutie (July 28–29) and the Sandy Hot Air Balloon Festival in early August promise to cap off summer in spectacular fashion.
Farmers markets are at peak season, the wildflowers in Albion Basin are expected to hit their best display in the coming weeks, and the long summer evenings — sunset near 9:00 p.m. — make every day feel like an invitation to get outside. Whether you have lived along the Wasatch Front for decades or you are exploring the region for a potential move, late July and early August are when this place truly shines. Outdoor Adventures: Peak Wildflowers & Late-Summer Trails
Late July is arguably the most spectacular time for outdoor activities along the Wasatch Front. Wildflowers are reaching their peak in the mid- and high-elevation canyons — Albion Basin above Alta is expected to hit its best display in the coming weeks — all trails are clear of snow up to 10,000+ feet, reservoirs are at their warmest, and the long daylight hours (sunrise around 6:00 a.m., sunset near 9:00 p.m.) mean you can enjoy an after-work hike and still be home for a patio dinner.
Albion Basin Wildflowers (Little Cottonwood Canyon)
Mid-to-late July is when Albion Basin — the high alpine meadow above Alta ski area — erupts with some of the most spectacular wildflower displays in the Intermountain West. Lupine, Indian paintbrush, and columbine blanket the meadows against a backdrop of rugged granite peaks. The Albion Basin Interpretive Trail is a relatively easy 1-mile loop. Note: Parking fills extremely early on summer weekends (before 7:00 a.m.) — consider a weekday visit. A fee or shuttle may be required during peak bloom. This is a must-do at least once during a Utah summer.
Evening Hikes in Corner Canyon (Draper)
Head up Corner Canyon around 6:30–7:00 p.m. when the sun dips behind the Oquirrh range. Shady trails, cooler temperatures, and spectacular sunset views over the south valley. Over 150 miles of interconnected trails make Corner Canyon one of the best trail systems in the state. If you are considering buying a home near Corner Canyon, this is the best way to experience the lifestyle firsthand.
Paddleboarding on Oquirrh Lake (Daybreak)
Daybreak residents can rent kayaks and paddleboards for free on Oquirrh Lake. For visitors, the 3.2-mile lake loop trail is perfect for a morning walk, followed by a dirty chai and fresh pastry at Biscotts Bakery & Cafe at the Hub. The lake is calmest in the early morning, making it ideal for sunrise paddle sessions. It is a small glimpse of the lifestyle that draws so many families to this community.
Blackridge Reservoir Swimming (Herriman)
This man-made reservoir with a sandy beach is Herriman's go-to summer swimming spot. The water is at its warmest in late July, and the surrounding trails and mountain biking paths make it easy to combine a swim with a full outdoor day. Kayaking and fishing are also popular here — a hidden gem that feels like a mountain retreat without leaving the valley.
Bell Canyon Waterfall (Sandy/Draper)
One of the most popular local hikes — the Bell Canyon Trail leads to a dramatic waterfall that is flowing well with summer snowmelt. Arrive early (before 8:00 a.m.) on weekends to secure parking at the trailhead. The lower reservoir is also a great swimming spot on hot July days.
Timpanogos Cave National Monument (American Fork)
A guided cave tour through three stunning limestone caves is one of Utah's most unique experiences. The 1.5-mile hike up to the cave entrance is steep but rewarding, and the 60-degree cave interior is a welcome break from July heat. Reservations are essential during peak summer — book early at recreation.gov. Located in American Fork Canyon, about 40 minutes from Draper and Sandy.
Provo River Rafting & Tubing (Utah County)
Cool off with a lazy float down the Provo River through Provo Canyon. Multiple outfitters in Vivian Park and along the canyon road offer tube and raft rentals. The gentle current makes this perfect for families with kids, and the scenery — towering canyon walls, pine trees, and mountain views — is spectacular. Midday floats are best when the sun is high and the water temperature is at its warmest.

Back-to-School Season Approaching
As the calendar turns toward August, back-to-school preparations begin across the Wasatch Front. Most Utah school districts start in mid-to-late August, making the next few weeks the sweet spot for family adventures before the school year kicks off. Here are a few things to keep on your radar:
- Final summer adventures: Hit the trails, visit the water parks, and catch the last farmers markets before school starts. Albion Basin wildflowers, Provo River tubing, and Cowabunga Bay are all at their best right now.
- School supply shopping: Many local retailers run back-to-school sales in late July and early August. Watch for deals on supplies, tech, and clothing at major stores across the valley.
- Sports tryouts: Fall sports tryouts for high school athletes usually happen in early-to-mid August. Families considering a move to a new school district should plan accordingly.
- Real estate timing: The back-to-school period is one of the busiest times in Wasatch Front real estate. Families want to be settled before the first day of school. If you are thinking about buying or selling this fall, now is the time to start the conversation.
