Updated July 16, 2026: Draper Days wraps up this weekend with the parade and fireworks on Saturday, July 18. Days of '47 Pioneer Day week follows immediately (July 18-25), and the Sandy Hot Air Balloon Festival is just three weeks away (August 7-8). After that, the season shifts into late-summer mode: Cornbelly's Sunflower Festival at Thanksgiving Point, Snowbird's legendary Oktoberfest, back-to-school, and the first hints of fall color in the canyons. This guide covers everything from mid-August through September.

Earlier this season? See our mid-July guide for Draper Days details and Pioneer Day schedules, or our late-July and early-August guide for the full calendar through August 8.

Summer on the Wasatch Front is a marathon, not a sprint. By mid-August, the intense July festival season has passed, but the best days of the year are still ahead. The crowds thin slightly, the temperatures soften just a few degrees, the sunflowers reach their peak at Thanksgiving Point, and the canyons start hinting at the gold and crimson to come. It is the sweet spot of the season — and it is the perfect time to explore the communities that make Salt Lake and Utah Counties such a special place to call home.

Adam and Natalie Stark spend every summer out at these events, exploring neighborhoods, and connecting with the communities they serve. Whether you are a long-time resident or researching a potential move to the Wasatch Front, this guide will help you make the most of late summer and early fall 2026.

Sandy Hot Air Balloon Festival: August 7-8

The 19th Annual Sandy City Hot Air Balloon Festival & Glow is one of the most visually stunning events of the entire summer. On Friday and Saturday mornings, arrive at Storm Mountain Park (1000 E. 11400 S.) before sunrise to watch dozens of colorful hot air balloons inflate and launch against the dramatic backdrop of the Wasatch Mountains. The sight of those silent giants rising into the dawn sky is something every Wasatch Front resident should experience at least once.

Saturday evening shifts to the South Towne Promenade for the Balloon Glow — tethered balloons light up in the dark like giant lanterns — accompanied by an outdoor dance party, food trucks, inflatables, and a dazzling drone show. It is a completely different experience from the morning launches and equally magical.

Pro tip from Adam and Natalie: Bring a blanket and hot coffee for the morning launches. The parking lot fills up fast, so arrive by 6:00 a.m. for the best viewing spots. And if you are exploring neighborhoods in Sandy, the area around Storm Mountain Park is one of the most beautiful corners of the city — take a drive through the surrounding streets while you are there.

Craft Lake City DIY Festival: August 7-9

Utah's premier local-centric festival returns to the Utah State Fairpark for its annual celebration of homegrown creativity. The Craft Lake City DIY Festival features hundreds of local artisans, food vendors, live music performances, STEM activities, a kids' makerspace, and a youth entrepreneur program. This is the place to discover the best of Utah's maker community — from handcrafted jewelry and ceramics to original art prints and small-batch food products.

If you are house-hunting or just settling into a new community, events like this are a wonderful way to connect with the local creative scene and meet the people who make Salt Lake County such a vibrant place to live.

Snowbird Oktoberfest: Starts August 22

One of Utah's most beloved annual traditions, Snowbird Oktoberfest kicks off on Saturday, August 22 and runs every Saturday and Sunday through October 11. Perched at 8,100 feet in Little Cottonwood Canyon, this Bavarian-style celebration features authentic German food and beer, live polka and alp horn music, family-friendly games, and artisans selling their wares. The views alone are worth the drive — the canyon scenery in late summer is spectacular, with golden aspen leaves beginning to appear by late September.

Snowbird is just a 20-minute drive from Sandy and Draper, making it an easy afternoon or evening trip for south-valley residents. The tram rides to the summit operate during Oktoberfest, offering panoramic views of the Wasatch Range and Salt Lake Valley below.

Cornbelly's Sunflower Festival at Thanksgiving Point

Late August through early September brings one of the most photogenic events of the year to Utah County. Cornbelly's Sunflower Festival at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi transforms the Ashton Gardens and surrounding farm fields into a sea of golden blooms. Walk through towering sunflower fields, pick your own bouquet, snap family photos against the vibrant yellow backdrop with the mountains in the distance, and enjoy seasonal treats and outdoor activities.

The Sunflower Festival is a precursor to the much larger Cornbelly's Halloween Festival that takes over the same grounds in October — with corn mazes, pumpkin patches, haunted attractions, and fall family fun. But the sunflower fields in late summer have their own quiet magic. It is the perfect way to ease into the fall season while still soaking up those warm, long days.

If you are exploring Lehi or the surrounding Utah County communities as a potential place to call home, a visit to Thanksgiving Point is a great way to experience what makes this area so special. The blend of family-friendly attractions, community events, and stunning natural surroundings is hard to beat.

FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention: September 24-26

One of the largest pop-culture conventions in the Intermountain West, FanX Salt Lake returns to the Salt Palace Convention Center in downtown Salt Lake City from September 24-26. The event draws thousands of fans for celebrity panels, artist alley, cosplay, gaming, and exclusive merchandise. It is a high-energy, family-friendly weekend that brings together fans of comics, sci-fi, fantasy, anime, and gaming from across the region.

FanX is a great example of the cultural amenities that make the Wasatch Front such a dynamic place to live — you can spend a Saturday hiking in a mountain canyon and a Sunday at a major pop-culture convention, all within a 20-minute drive of each other.

Back-to-School Season on the Wasatch Front

Late August marks the start of the school year for the region's major districts. Canyons School District (serving Sandy, Draper, Cottonwood Heights, and surrounding areas), Jordan School District (serving South Jordan, Herriman, Riverton, Daybreak, and West Jordan), and Alpine School District (serving Lehi, American Fork, Highland, Alpine, and Saratoga Springs) all begin their academic year in the last two weeks of August.

For families researching a move to the Wasatch Front, school quality is often the top priority. The Canyons district features top-rated schools like Draper Elementary, Corner Canyon High School, and Indian Hills Middle School. Jordan School District serves Daybreak's rapidly growing families with South Jordan Middle School and Herriman High School. Alpine School District is home to Utah County's highest-performing schools, including Lehi High School, Skyridge High School, and Mountain Ridge Junior High.

Adam and Natalie have helped dozens of families navigate school-zone research during their home searches. If you are looking at neighborhoods and want to understand the school options, they are always happy to share what they know.

Late Summer Dining: Patio Season's Last Hurrah

August and September are when patio dining is at its absolute best along the Wasatch Front. The heat of July has passed, the evenings are long and golden, and every restaurant with an outdoor space is at peak form. Here are some of our favorite spots for a late-summer meal across the communities we serve.

Draper: Elevated Views & Southern Comfort

The Cliff Dining Pub remains one of our top recommendations for a special night out. Perched on the east bench of Draper, the patio overlooks the entire Salt Lake Valley — and the sunset views from here in late August are nothing short of spectacular. The gastropub menu is reliably excellent, with craft cocktails and a well-curated beer list.

For a more casual vibe, Royal on Ridge offers a beautiful patio with mountain views and a menu that blends American comfort food with creative twists. The Charleston Draper is another patio standout, with stylish outdoor dining and live music on select evenings. And if you are craving southern comfort, Sauce Boss Southern Kitchen on 12300 S serves up some of the best hot chicken, ribs, and mac and cheese in the valley.

Sandy & South Jordan

In Sandy, Sunday's Best is a beloved brunch and lunch spot with a cheerful patio. For a more upscale evening, Tiburon Fine Dining offers a covered patio with a refined menu. In South Jordan, Brickstone's Kitchen and Bar at the Embassy Suites has a comfortable patio setting that works well for both date nights and family dinners.

In Daybreak, Moena Cafe is a lively breakfast and brunch spot with excellent outdoor seating right in the heart of Downtown Daybreak. Pair it with a walk around Oquirrh Lake afterward — the 3.2-mile loop trail is beautiful in the late summer evening light. Biscotts Bakery & Cafe at The Hub is the perfect stop for a morning pastry and coffee before a lake stroll.

Herriman & Lehi

In Herriman, Slackwater is a local favorite for pizza and craft beer, with a family-friendly atmosphere that makes it a go-to for parents. The Garage Grill (serving both Draper and Herriman) offers outdoor seating and a classic American menu.

In Lehi, Harvest Restaurant at Thanksgiving Point serves contemporary American comfort food with fresh, local ingredients in an elegant setting. For a more casual lunch, The Tower Deli & Grill is a reliable spot for sandwiches and paninis.

Late Summer Outdoor Adventures: Hikes, Water & Wildflowers

August and September are arguably the best months for hiking on the Wasatch Front. The summer crowds have thinned, the temperatures are milder, and the high-alpine meadows are still lush and green. Here are some of our favorite late-summer outings:

Albion Basin Wildflowers

Little Cottonwood Canyon. The wildflower display at Alta's Albion Basin peaks in late July and carries into early August. The Cecret Lake Trail is a short, family-friendly hike through meadows bursting with color. By late August, the flowers fade but the golden aspen light begins to appear.

Corner Canyon Trails

Draper's 90+ mile trail network is a world-class destination for mountain biking, trail running, and hiking. Late afternoon and evening rides in August offer cooler temperatures and spectacular sunset views over the valley. The Clarks Trail and Ghost Falls Trail are local favorites.

Oquirrh Lake & Daybreak

Daybreak residents can rent kayaks and paddleboards for free on the lake. The 3.2-mile loop trail is perfect for an evening walk or jog. The lake is stocked with fish, and the community docks are a favorite gathering spot for families on warm August evenings.

Waterfall Hikes

Rocky Mouth Falls (Sandy), Battle Creek Falls (Pleasant Grove), and Donut Falls (Big Cottonwood Canyon) are all short, family-friendly hikes that end at a waterfall — perfect for hot August days when you want to cool off. The trails are shaded and the waterfall pools are refreshing.

If you are new to the area or just exploring, these trails give you a real sense of why the Wasatch Front is such a desirable place to live. The access to world-class outdoor recreation from virtually any neighborhood is extraordinary. Adam and Natalie have helped many clients find homes that put them minutes from their favorite trailheads — it is one of the most common requests they hear.

Farmers Markets: Peak Season Continues

August and September are the peak of the farmers market season. The produce is at its most abundant — tomatoes, peaches, corn, melons, squash, fresh herbs — and the markets are buzzing with energy. Here is where to find the best markets in late summer:

Daybreak Farmers Market

Every Saturday, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. through October 17 in Downtown Daybreak. Fresh local produce, artisan goods, and specialty foods. Pair it with a walk around Oquirrh Lake.

Sandy Farmers Market

Every Saturday, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. through October 17 at the Sandy Amphitheater grounds. Live music often accompanies the shopping experience.

Draper Farmers Market

Every Tuesday, 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. through October 13 at Smith Fields Park (200 E 13400 S). Food trucks, farm-fresh produce, and a community picnic atmosphere.

Downtown SLC Farmers Market

Every Saturday, 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. through October 24 at Pioneer Park. Over 200 vendors with fresh produce, artisan breads, local honey, and crafts. The Tuesday evening market continues through September.

Saratoga Springs Funday Monday

Every Monday, 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. through September 28 at Neptune Park. Local vendors, food trucks, and a community gathering on Utah County's western edge.

Herriman Summer Sunset Series

Recurring Monday markets through September at J. Lynn Crane Park. Live music, boutique vendors, food trucks, and a relaxed community atmosphere.

Looking Ahead: September Highlights

As August gives way to September, the calendar shifts to a different rhythm. The back-to-school energy brings a fresh start to the year, the concerts move indoors, and the first hints of autumn color appear in the canyons. Here is what we are looking forward to in September:

September Highlights

  • September 9: Squeeze at the Eccles Theater — the British rock legends bring their catalog of hits to Capitol Theatre in downtown Salt Lake City
  • September 10-20: Utah State Fair at the Utah State Fairpark — the 170th annual edition with carnival rides, livestock shows, live entertainment, rodeo, and classic fair food
  • September 17-18: Swan Lake: Symphony of Lights at Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center — a landmark new ballet production
  • September 18 - October 31: Cornbelly's Halloween Festival at Thanksgiving Point — Utah's biggest fall festival with corn mazes, pumpkin patches, haunted attractions, light shows, and fireworks
  • September 24-26: FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention at the Salt Palace — the Intermountain West's largest pop-culture event
  • September 26: Sandy Heritage Festival — a celebration of Sandy's history and community
  • September 27: Ghostbusters in Concert at Abravanel Hall — the classic film with live orchestral accompaniment
  • Every Friday night through September: Main Street Live in downtown Salt Lake City — free live entertainment on the steps of Eccles Theater

September is also when the canyons begin their transformation. The aspen trees in Big Cottonwood, Little Cottonwood, and American Fork Canyons start turning gold in late September, and by early October the color is at its peak. The Alpine Loop Scenic Backway (Highway 92 from American Fork Canyon to Sundance and Provo Canyon) is one of the most spectacular fall drives in the country, and it is right in our backyard.

Making the Most of Late Summer on the Wasatch Front

The stretch from mid-August through September is one of the best times of year to experience everything the Wasatch Front has to offer. The weather is perfect, the events are abundant, and the sense of community is palpable at every farmers market, festival, and neighborhood gathering.

If you are exploring the region for a potential move — or if you already live here and are thinking about your next home — there is no better time to get out and explore. Visit the farmers markets, walk the trails, grab dinner on a patio, and talk to the people who make these communities great. Then, when you are ready to take the next step, Adam and Natalie would love to help you find the perfect place to call home.
